Your Ideas on a Make-over Needed!!

I have been contemplating a make-over on my foyer for quite some time. before Mom got sick she was going to help me get this wall paper off the wall and paint it a nice shade of whitish--grayish something!! We talked and laughed but with 3 graduations in 2 years there was just not enough energy for all that. Once she got sick I never thought about it again. But now as I am putting the decorations away I am thinking that is time to make myself busy. This is the light that  has hung in our foyer since we bought the house. I loved it's strange bulbs and how different it was. Now it just seems strange and ugly.
In behind you can get a taste of the wallpaper. I am ready for it to go!

There are some beautiful stain glass windows, woodwork and an open stair case that could make this room into a stunning entryway. I know that the lighting is bad but I think you can see that there is another window on the landing. The stairs are already just wood.
I am not sure about a paint color or anything else for that matter. If you would like to share your ideas for this room please feel free to let it all hang out....I could use some inspiration here!

I so love all the woodwork and those stain glass windows are to die for. Love the beautiful staircase. The wallpaper, I agree with you, I would strip it and paint the wall a light beige/neutral color, but it is one beautiful area to me. I like the fixture, it is different. Maybe just paint it to resemble wrought iron. It would keep its character. You have such a wonderful foyer. So inviting. Enjoy whatever you decide.

I so agree with Angela, it is wonderful! I like a white or beige with an umber tint. The light fixture stays, http://www.thepennyparlor.com/2010/08/wonder-of-spray-paint.html this paint would not have the harshness as black. Can't wait to see what you try. Good luck and a Happy New Year!

Don't forget to look into "historic" paint colors before choosing.

Dianntha, Send me some more info on your color palette throughout the adjoining rooms. Do you want to coordinate? Are you keeping any of the existing artwork you have in the foyer? What are the themes of those pieces? Did that light fixture originally have globes of some kind? It's really not a bad piece, but the bare bulbs don't seem to fit the room's ambience. Just some thoughts- shoot me an e-mail when you have time. ~ Sue

Whether paint of wallpaper you need something lighter and brighter to show off all the wood and the stained glass. Your entry is very similar to my late mothers. She had a stained glass window at the bottom and one on the landing, and lots of beautiful wood.
I believe the light originally had glass globes. I would think about possibly painting it, and adding globes. It will look completely different.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Dianntha, What a great old house you have - with wonderful character. I sure don't have that in my 1976 house! I don't have any ideas, but can't wait to see what you do. ~Ann

What a magnificent entry. It's bigger than my little parlor. I agree with your readers on painting the fixture, maybe oil-rubbed bronze. To show off that fabulous trim, I would go with a grayish sage green which for some reason are always found with the tans. Whatever you love, will be right.

I love those windows and the beautiful wood trim and stairway. The stained glass is amazing and I think the light is too. I don't think I'd touch that light until you first paint the foyer. I like the idea of a light gray or creamy white color that will make the wood POP and look beautiful. I think once that is done, you will have a lovely canvas to make your foyer 'your own.'

Looking forward to what you do.

Hello Lady
Trust your well
My two cents
see the lead in the window glass
I love the look of wrought iron
What about picking up on it and panting the lighting fixture as if it were iron, mat black.
Picking up as on woman noted on the art for influence.
In Feng shui the location matters in the effect of light.
It to the north the blues/black of water influence
If South reds/yellows keeping the gold
If East blue/greens picking up wood elements in frames
If West white and silvers/pastels

Sound strange to many who get upset at a notion of eastern religion. I have seen the effects of sun/shadow as house position and decor are influence. Made a wonderful change here in my home.
Pass a mirror and see your soul remember...you are beautiful.

Beautiful wood work & stain glass~drooling over them just breathtaking~ what ever you do will be pretty~

I know what you mean about the light & wallpaper I was going through the same in my parlor~ needed a change~

My input~
I love irvins lighting or something similiar~ the wood chandeliers or the iron~
~walls I would stay neutral~ with it being so dark~ lighter walls would brighten it up & bring out the rich color of the wood~

Looking forward to seeing your re-do~
